This article presents a model of perseverance and a categorisation of strategies that individuals can use to persist longer when facing adversity.
It combines control theory and appraisal theory to form a dynamic model that describes goal pursuits over time. Perseverance is enhanced when new attempts to remove the adversity involved can be conceived, when the issues are re-framed, when the goal is modified, or when the ability to deal with adversity is improved.
